Replacing Outer Axle Seals on TO-30

I need to replace both outer seals on each axle of my To-30. Would you please tell me how to remove the rear axles?

After removing the axle assembly, the bearing retaining collar has to be drilled parallel to the axle with a 1/4″ drill bit and then split with a cold chisel. Use rags and duct tape to keep dirt and drill shavings out of the bearing assembly. Once the collar is split it can be removed along with the bearing and bearing housing assembly by pressing them off the axle using a hydraulic press or special tools most Massey Ferguson or Ford New Holland dealers and many independent tractor repair shops should have.

Once the bearing and retainer housing have been removed wash the parts in solvent, dry, use a press to remove and replace the outer seal. The new seal should be soaked in oil before installing it. Inspect the bearing and race and replace if necessary. If either is bad, replace both. A press is needed to remove and install the race in the bearing retainer housing.

Inspect the axle shaft particularly where the oil seal rides and polish with emery cloth as required. Place the bearing housing with the new seal and race on the axle, followed by the bearing.

Heat a new collar to approximately 250 degrees and place it on the axle shaft. Use a special tool or a piece of pipe to drive the collar down against the bearing. Replace the seal in the axle housing. Once the axle assembly has cooled pack the bearing with grease and replace it in the trumpet axle housing. Grease the splines and be careful not to damage the new seal in the trumpet housing.

Use a new gasket and the original shims. Once the nuts are tight, check the end clearance between the axles. If the clearance is too much the seals may be damaged, if the clearance is too little the ends of the axles will rub and may weld themselves together. To check the clearance which should be .002-.008″, turn one axle and observe the other. Remove just enough shims, one at a time is best, so the other axle turns in the same direction. The axle bearing retainer housing nuts be tightened before rechecking the clearance.

Once the axles turn in the same direction, begin re-installing shims. Begin by installing one additional thin shim. The shims can be removed or installed on either side by removing the axle. Tighten the nuts on the retainer and recheck by turning one axle and observing the other. This must be done each time a shim is removed or installed. Install an additional thin shim or replace a thin shim with a thicker shim or additional shims one at a time until one axle turns in the opposite direction or stands still when the opposite one is turned. When this occurs you have obtained the correct axle clearance.
